Do Foldable Containers Enhance Efficient Empty Container Repositioning under Demand Fluctuation?—Case of the Pacific Region

چکیده
This study considers the empty container repositioning problem of shipping companies that use standard and 3-in-1 foldable containers with more advanced designs. A mathematical model is developed to compare total management costs various patterns in different cargo demand scenarios. Numerous scenario analyses simulations were conducted, focusing on a liner service Pacific Islands where are likely be present because imbalance between inbound outbound flows containers, including static analysis consecutive fluctuation approaches. Results show introduction depending growth rate demand, can reduced. However, introducing large number may increase repositioning. Moreover, cost reduction effect adding another containership increases cases future substantially. Furthermore, not only effectively reduces but also makes stable predictable.

Positioning empty containers under dependent demand process
Owing to trade imbalance, shipping companies position empty containers between ports or depots periodically. The most difficult problem for positioning is that it is not possible to know the exact amounts of empty containers required in the future. The paper deals with the problem of positioning empty containers in a port area with multiple depots. Customer demands and returning containers in d...
متن کاملThe container shipping network design problem with empty container repositioning
This paper addresses the design of container liner shipping service networks by explicitly taking into account empty container repositioning. Two key and interrelated issues, those of deploying ships and containers are usually treated separately by most existing studies on shipping network design. In this paper, both issues are considered simultaneously. The problem is formulated as a two-stage...
متن کاملSample Average Approximation for Stochastic Empty Container Repositioning
To incorporate uncertainties in empty container repositioning problem, we formulate a two-stage stochastic programming model with random demand, supply, ship weight capacity and ship space capacity. The Sample Average Approximation (SAA) method is applied to approximate the expected value function. Several non-independent and identically distributed sampling schemes are considered to enhance th...
متن کاملFoldable containers and dependent types
Functional programs using foldable containers need reasoning tools as they are not equipped with laws. Moreover we want to allow any finite type to be foldable as well. Folding over all the values of a finite type is particularly interesting in a dependent type theory which features Π and Σ types. Our solution uses parametricity to show how foldable containers relate to monoid homomorphisms. Ou...
متن کاملModels and algorithms for the empty container repositioning and its integration with routing problems
The introduction of containers has fostered intermodal freight transportation. A definition of intermodality was provided by the European Commission as " a characteristic of a transport system whereby at least two different modes are used in an integrated manner in order to complete a door-to-door transport sequence " EUROPA 2005. The intermodal container transportation leads to several benefit...
